Tall units – Benefits and uses
By Jess Whitehead

In addition to our previous article on Islands, we wanted to explore another of our most popular furniture styles, this being tall units.

Tall units and islands are becoming a common partnership within kitchens and in some cases replacing the need for wall-run base units. With the sink, hob, and all necessary worktop space being featured within an island, the tall units tend to house the ovens/microwaves and fridge freezers alongside large storage units.

There tends to be two different styles of executing tall units, this being a traditional shaker style (pictured above) or a handleless version with either push to open, or most popular, vertical grip ledges (pictured below) to achieve the true German handless style.

The main reason for this is completely down to personal taste and the overall look/style you want to achieve within your kitchen, the most popular in reference to Studio 35 appears to be the option of the grip ledge. With this you can use a contrasting colour to add an extra element to your kitchen, features like this become the jewellery within your kitchen.

One of the unique benefits is that you can stack extra units on top of your tall units, allowing you to achieve a dramatic look, whilst making use of tall ceilings, to maximise storage.

One reason for tall units’ popularity is improved functionality, especially in relation to raised ovens, to allow less straining when being used, making them more accessible to everyone. Plus, tall units provide maximum storage as they take up the same floor space as a base unit with a wall unit above, yet allows for a much larger capacity of storage, achieved by utilising the middle space left between the two.

Therefore, they are becoming relevant in smaller kitchens with one wall consisting of tall units and the second consisting of base and wall units for worktop space. This being the only downside, that extra tall units reduce worktop space. For those with larger kitchens, this is where the previous article on islands comes into place and how the two work together to create a partnership.

If you were to utilise tall units within your kitchen, which style would be your preferred?
A more traditional shaker style or a modern handleless version with the option of grip ledges or the push to open function.
